Birds, Fall Foliage and a Seal

On Sunday we had our last RiverRide of the season.  It was a beautiful, sunny day and a little cool—the iconic New England fall day!  The river has changed since our last ride.  The green has been replaced by russets and the birds are thinning out.  There were no Osprey and almost no herons, only a single egret patrolling the shoreline.  A little north oF Swan Point, a Harbor Seal broke the surface for a short cameo.

Inside the water was another story.  The river was teeming with baitfish and cormorants were diving through the schools and gulls were picking fish off the surface.  But the cormorants are beginning to gather in large flocks and soon they will begin to migrate south, leaving the gulls behind to welcome the winter ducks.

The RiverRide’s expert guide, Greg Gerritt, a noted urban naturalist, environmental advocate, and wildlife videographer, shared some of the sights, along with his insights, in a beautiful  video,
